Newfoundland and Labrador Water Resources Portal: Community Information Session

This course is generally 2 hours in duration and is scheduled on an individual basis with communities. Evening sessions can be accommodated. Each session can be tailored to a specific community but generally includes the following topics:

Mapping Application

This section will provide a brief overview of the tools and information available through the mapping application:

  • Data layers
  • Navigation tools; zoom in, zoom out, pan, get coordinate, map identify, etc.
  • Creating and printing map reports
  • Map selection options; select by community, select by water supply, select by location, etc.
  • Map tools such as draw graphic, draw label, draw shape, measure a line or area, etc.

Community Water Resources Reports

This section will provide participants with an introduction to the various drinking water quality reports that are provided by the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment to communities with a public drinking water system. The introduction includes an explanation of the parameters included in each report, as well as the purpose of each report. The instructor will also review the drinking water quality data for a specific community and highlight any issues they may be experiencing. During the session the instructor will demonstrate how to navigate and interpret the Community Water Resources Reports available through the NL Water Resources Portal, including the following:

  • Boil Water Advisories
  • Source Water Nutrients and Metals
  • Source Water Physical Parameters and Major Ions
  • Tap Water Nutrients and Metals
  • Tap Water Physical Parameters and Major Ions
  • THMs All Line Data
  • THMs Summary
  • HAAs All Line Data
  • HAAs Summary
  • Drinking Water Quality Index
  • Langelier Index

Current Boil Water Advisories

This section will provide an introduction to the Current Boil Water Advisories (BWAs) tool which provides users with access to a listing of active BWAs that are currently in place throughout the province. This tool provides information such as community name, population, serviced area, water source name, BWA issue date, reason and code for BWA issuance, etc. The instructor will also demonstrate how to navigate and search for data available through this tool.

Public Water Supplies

This section of the training session will provide an introduction to the Public Water Supplies tool which provides users with a complete listing of all drinking water systems that are owned and operated by communities throughout the province and have been designated as a public drinking water system. This tool provides information such as community name, water supply name, protection status, chlorination, treatment, population serviced, etc. The instructor will demonstrate how to navigate and search for data available through this tool.

Ad Hoc Queries

This is a specialized tool that allows the user to customize a data search with respect to the drinking water quality reports that are issued by the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment. The instructor will demonstrate common queries that may be of interest to communities.
