Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

  • Project Description:The proponent has submitted a five year operating plan for Forest Management District 20 (Sandwich Bay, Labrador Management District). Forest Management District 20 is located on the south coast of Labrador and is bounded to the north by Lake Melville, to the west by Etagaulet and Paradise Rivers, and to the south by the Main and Hawke Rivers. The plan covers the operating period from January 2005 to December 2009. The plan describes past forestry activities, the allocation of wood supply and harvesting, road construction, silviculture activities and environmental protection. The plan describes proposed harvesting of approximately 30,085 cubic metres of timber per year (150,425 cubic metres total over the five year period) by commercial and domestic harvesting. Construction of 16 kilometres of forest roads to access mature and over mature forest stands.
  • September 17, 2004 - The undertaking was registered.
  • October 22, 2004 - Public comments are due.
  • December 3, 2004 - The Minister releases the project from further environmental assessment.
