Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

Project Description

  • Forest Management District 16 consists primarily of the lower portion of the Great Northern Peninsula bounded to the east by White Bay, to the south by Gaff Topsails, to the west by Gros Morne National Park and to the North by Forest Management District 17.
  • The proponent proposes to harvest approximately 1,000,000 cubic metres of timber and to construct approximately 200 kilometres of resource road. It is proposed that forest management activities would be concentrated in the northern portion of the District in the Upper Humber / Main River areas, and to a lesser extent in the Kitty's Brook and Deer Lake areas. Proposed silviculture treatments consist of 375 hectares of pre-commercial thinning and 189 hectares of planting per year.
  • October 30, 2001 - The undertaking was registered.
  • December 20, 2001 - The Minister announced that the undertaking was released, in part, on condition 1) that part of the undertaking outside the Main River watershed is released from further environmental assessment subject to any other Act or Regulations and 2) with respect to that part of the undertaking within the Main River watershed, an Environmental Preview Report is required.
  • January 24, 2002 - The Minister announced that an environmental assessment committee has been appointed.
  • February 27, 2002 - The Minister announced that Guidelines for preparation of an Environmental Preview Report have been issued to the proponent.
  • May 30, 2002 - The Minister announced that the proponent has submitted the Environmental Preview Report.
  • August 9, 2002 - The Minister announced that the part of the undertaking within the Main River Watershed has been conditionally released.
