Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

Project Description:

The proponent intends to construct and operate an iron ore beneficiation plant to process ore from the Houston 1 and 2 Deposits Mining Project in western Labrador. The process involves the crushing, screening, washing and magnetic separation of the ore. Process water will be taken from an abandoned open pit. Reject water and sediment will be discharged to the same pit. Two 9 -10 kilometre pipelines will be used to transport process water from the abandoned pit and to direct reject water back into the pit. The beneficiation plant will operate from May through October each year, weather permitting. Construction is scheduled to will take place in June 2014 and production is scheduled to begin in June or July 2015.

  • February 6, 2013 - The undertaking was registered.
  • March 14, 2013 - Deadline for public comments.
  • March 23, 2013 - The minister’s decision is due.
  • May 9, 2013 - The Minister Announced that the project is released.
