Twillingate Shrimp Shell Waste Processing

Proponent: Eastern Star Group Canada Ltd.

Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

Project Description:

The proponent plans to obtain shrimp shell waste material from seafood processing plants in the Twillingate area to extract the protein for use in aquaculture feed and dry the remaining shells for shipping to markets in China. The process involves removing the water content using very high pressure and through a centrifuge process removing the protein component. This protein component will be frozen and sold to aquaculture feed producers. The remaining semi-dried shells will undergo further drying in a large oil-fired drum dryer. This dried product will then be compressed, wrapped and containerized for shipping on a weekly basis. The proposed facility will be constructed on a site currently owned by the Twillingate Harbour Authority located across the harbour from the Notre Dame Seafoods processing plant. Shrimp shell waste material will be off-loaded into large fish boxes and trucked to the Eastern Star Group processing plant.
