Proponent: Glenfair Farms Ltd.

Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

Project Description:

The proposal is to develop a cranberry and forage farm on a 60 hectare peat bog located approximately 5 kilometres northeast of Wooddale and seven kilometres north of Bishop’s Falls. Construction will be carried out over a two to five year period with approximately four hectares of cranberry fields and four hectares of forage developed by 2010 with additional developments each year after. The development of the cranberry fields will include removal of vegetation and the installation of irrigation and sediment ponds, berms, bed drainage tile and water control structures. Sand, fertilizers and pesticides will be applied to the cranberry beds during operation. Harvesting of the cranberries includes flooding each field, in succession, with approximately 40-45 centimetres of water and removal with a cranberry beater. The development of the forage fields will involve ditching, application of lime, fertilizer and seeds. Forage will be harvested by tractor. The project is scheduled to commence in July, 2010 if approved.
