Labrador City Carol Project Revised Tailings ManagementPlan

Proponent: Iron Ore Company of Canada

Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

  • Project Description:The proponent is proposing the confinement of tailings from the IOC Carol Project. This is to be achieved through flocculation of the consolidated effluent streams and subsequent discharge of the flocculated effluent into the naturally confining trench located in the western portion of Wabush Lake . The discharge point would be immediately to the north of the existing tailings beach and within the confines of the existing IOC lease line allocation. This approach will confine the tailings within the trench in Wabush Lake , thus, negating the construction of a 15 kilometre rock fill dyke as previously proposed. In-lake dykes will be constructed, however, to connect the three small islands at the north end of Wabush Lake to the eastern shore, thus establishing a single flow channel at the northwest corner of the lake. A temporary access road approximately 195 metres long will be constructed off Javelin Road to assist construction. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin June, 2006.
  • February 13, 2006 - The undertaking was registered.
  • March 22, 2006 - Public comments are due.
  • April 4, 2006 - The Minister released the project from further environmental assessment.
